I wrote this post for Quirk Books about the amazing Margaret Atwood.
Oh, Margaret Atwood what would we do without you? Your books, poetry and very words have inspired us. Our ode to you and your work is the least we can do as a thank you.
Oryx and Crake
The Queen of dystopia solidified her reign with the MaddAddam trilogy. Oryx and Crake shows the fall of humanity through the eyes of a survivor called Snowman. This post-apocalyptic tale of the future will have you running straight for the nearest fall out shelter.
The Robber Bride
Atwood does a complete 360 with the next book on this list, The Robber Bride. This comedy of manners takes a look at the complex realtionship between women. After a group of friends have been burned by their boyfriend stealing friend, Zenia, they confront her. This book puts a whole new spin on the definition of “frenemy”!
Whoever said writers can’t learn new tricks has never meet Margaret Atwood. She published her first graphic novel when she was 76 years old! And of course it’s fabulous! When an engineer accidently combines his DNA with that of his cat and an owl, you get superhero Catbird.
The Handmaid’s Tale
Our ode will end with the pinnacle of Atwood’s work, The Handmaid’s Tale. This is speculative fiction at its finest, with the story of Offred, a Handmaiden in a repressive society. Thirty years later, this novel has stayed scarily relevant to this day. Cheer’s to Atwood’s fine work and fiction staying fiction.
