My Year in Books 2017

I did it! I conquered the beast that is my 2017 Goodreads Challenge (roars in triumph). I set my yearly goal for 120 books, and I ended the year at 139! Here is a breakdown of the books I read. In total I read 44,765 pages with the average book being 322 pages, and my average rating was 3 stars. Let’s look at some highlights of the year.

The shortest book I read was “Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire” by Neil Gaiman. At 48 pages this graphic novel was very lackluster in my opinion. The story was confusing and all over the place. The art style was cool and Gothic, I just dont think this short story translated very well into a graphic novel.¬† I usually like Neil Gaiman’s work, but this book was a bit disappointing.

The longest book I read this year was “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas. This classic comes in at a whopping 1,276 pages! I wanted to read more “classic” literature this year and what better book to read than Dumas? I actually listened to this on audiobook, which was around 50 hours long. I really liked this book! I would probably put it in my top 5 books of the year. The story was well done and interesting. Who doesn’t love a good revenge story? And the Count is the most famous tale of betrayal of all time.

The highest rated book I read was “Words of Radiance” by Brandon Sanderson. This the second book in the series. Again, I listened to this massive book via audiobook. Because who wants to lug around a 1,000 page book on the bus? Not this lady. This book was amazing! I loved it more than the first book in the series, which is rare for me. I just finished the third book last week. This series is worth the hype!

Finally, my favorite book of 2017 was “The Last Hour of Gann” by R. Lee Smith. And I’m super hesitate to recommend it to anyone because this book is very rapey. Why would I read/like such a book you might ask? Well, let me tell you. I read this book for Vaginal Fantasy, I did not pick it. However, this book is hands down the best space opera romance I’ve ever read. Lots of great character development and world building. Yes, the relationship is between a lizard man and human woman. But, could not book this book down to save my life! I loved it (expect for the raping, duh).
