Ah, the old bait and switch. You thought this blog post would be something dirty, didn’t you? Well I’m sorry to disappoint you, but it’s not. This post is about graphic novels! I will admit that graphic novels are pretty new to me as a reader. So, to see what I like and what I don’t, I’ve been reading pretty much anything I can get my hands on. Hence the odd mix of styles that I’m about to show you. The three graphic novels below are just a few of ones I’ve read lately.
The Sculptor by Scott McCloud is definitely the largest graphic novel I’ve ever read. My library rarely carries graphic novels, but fortunately for me they had this one in the new books section. And I’m glad that I checked it out of the library because I really didn’t like it. Yes, the drawings are nice and the choice of colors were cool, but the overall story felt needlessly depressing and the characters extremely unlikable.
Now, the Gigantic Beard That Was Evil by Stephen Collins was more up my alley. I love graphic novels that are just black and white, maybe with just a pop of color here and there. The story I thought was quirky and a bit dark, but I dug it. I read this one on my Kindle, but I would definitely buy this book to display because it’s HUGE and you couldn’t help but pick it up. My friend said that it reminded her of a Shel Silverstein book, and I totally agree with that comparison.
Of course I saved the best for last! Nimona by Noelle Stevenson was originally a webcomic that was later published as a graphic novel. This book is just the freaking best! I love the characters, especially Nimona with her shape shifting and devil-may-care attitude. I also like the art style and color palette used throughout the book. My only complaint is that I want to keep reading, but there isn’t anymore story!! I guess I will just have to just read Noelle’s other great series Lumberjanes in the meantime.
