Happy Halloween my lovelies! I hope you have a safe and fun night ahead of you. I plan on staying home with a bucket of candy and finish watching Stranger Things season 2. I thought it would be cool to share a few book recommendations for the holiday. If you like spooky or haunted reads, then you should check out the books listed below!
The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
I read this book for my Vaginal Fanatsy book club a few months ago, and really enjoyed it! It’s about a young girl named Li Lan who is haunted by a ghostly suitor. Li Lan must enter the Chinese afterlife to solve a mystery and find a way to get rid of her unwanted ghost lover. This book has a lot of interesting Chinese folk lore mixed into the narrative. If you like ghost stories with a hint of romance then I would highly recommend The Ghost Bride.
The Fireman by Joe Hill
If horror is more your jam, the I would suggest reading The Fireman. Set in a world where a deadly pandemic is spreading, Harper, our protagonist must survive the chaos and find a safe place for her unborn child. I like Joe Hill’s writing style, which is very similar to his father’s Stephen King. The book focuses more on the evil of man than your typical monster. I loved the cast of characters and really rooted for them to survive. If you want a book that will have you on the edge of your seat, then you should read The Fireman.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Last on the list is the Gothic classic, The Haunting of Hill House. The story follows a group of four occult seekers as they investigate a supposed haunted house. The book is full of beautiful pose and eerie storytelling, both of which Jackson is famous for. This is a great book to read in one sitting. If your a fan of classic horror, or Shirley Jackson then I would add this book to you tbr.
